Google Conviction--An Internet Freedom Infringement

The long feared possibility of an Internet censorship is hanging over the World Wide Web like Damocles’ sword. The recent ruling by an Italian court convicting three Google executives and holding the company responsible for the content posted on its site can open many floodgates that would prove detrimental for the freedom of the Internet.

The case revolves around a video uploaded to Google Video in 2006. The video that drew 5,500 views in the two months showed an autistic boy in Turin being pummeled and insulted by teenage bullies at school. Even though Google Italy pulled it down two hours after being notified by police, the boy's father and an advocacy group for people with Down syndrome complained that the video violated privacy protection laws.

The Italian prosecutors said that the verdict upheld privacy principles and put the rights of individuals ahead of those of businesses. He further added that the case would force Google and other firms to be held accountable for screening videos hosted on their sites.

But how can you hold a company responsible for contents that are uploaded by a third-party? In a rather strange move, the judge equated Google to other publishing media and mentioned that they are responsible for the content and that all the content should be regulated. It is the first time that an Internet company has been held responsible for the content posted on its system. It is definitely an infringement on the Internet freedom and this will definitely change the World Wide Web that we know. No doubt everyone around the world has been flabbergasted with this ruling and the implications that it might have are even more mind-boggling.

The tools of free speech will be gone if intermediaries like Google or anyone who host a web site can be persecuted for other people’s content. That would mean that the site has to regulate each and every content. That would also mean that personal blogging sites, video upload sites, social networking sites and community sites and boards can come under scrutiny and those sites would be responsible for all the content that an individual puts up. It would be like blaming the knife maker for the murder committed by someone using his knives.

In addition, the search and advertising business depends heavily on its reach into every corner of the global Internet and on providing users access to as much digital content as possible, regardless of its origins or ownership. But this Italian ruling poses a significant challenge to all the search and advertising firms as they can be legally held responsible for text, photographs or videos made available by third parties.

Bloom Energy--Power In A Box

To call it revolutionary right now might seem being little too optimistic but it does seem to have the potential to become a truly revolutionary product. As per the company, the Bloom Energy Server is based on the solid oxide fuel cell (which the company claims can provide a cleaner, more reliable, and more affordable alternative to both today’s electric grid as well as traditional renewable energy sources) and provides distributed power generation, allowing customers to efficiently create their own electricity onsite. A confident Dr. KR Sridhar, principal co-founder and CEO of Bloom Energy mentioned, “We believe that we can too have the same kind of impact on energy that the mobile phone had on communications. Just as cell phones circumvented landlines to proliferate telephony, Bloom Energy will enable the adoption of distributed power as a smarter, localized energy source. Our customers are the cornerstone of that vision and we are thrilled to be working with industry leading companies to lower their energy costs, reduce their carbon footprint, improve their energy security, and showcase their commitment to a better future.“

The Idea That Led To Bloom
For NASA, Dr.Sridhar and his team were charged with building technology to help sustain life on Mars using solar energy and water to produce air to breath and fuel for transportation. They soon realized that their technology could have an even greater impact here on Earth and began work on what would become the Bloom Energy Server.

The company informed that Bloom’s fuel cell technology is fundamentally different from the legacy “hydrogen” fuel cells most people are familiar with and is distinct in four primary ways:
· It uses lower cost materials
· Provides unmatched efficiency in converting fuel to electricity
· Has the ability to run on a wide range of renewable or traditional fuels
· It is more easily deployed and maintained.

Customers and Benefits
The company further informed the customers currently successfully using the product are Bank of America, The Coca-Cola Company, Cox Enterprises, eBay, FedEx Express, Google, Staples and Walmart.

The company said that their customers have deployed the solution to lower and/or fix their energy costs, while significantly cutting their carbon footprint and enhancing their energy security by reducing their dependence on the grid. In addition, customers who purchase Bloom’s systems can expect a 3-5 year payback on their capital investment from the energy cost savings; and depending on whether they are using a fossil or renewable fuel, they can also achieve a 40-100% reduction in their carbon footprint as compared with the U.S. grid.

They further informed that the Bloom Energy Server converts air and nearly any fuel source – ranging from natural gas to a wide range of biogases – into electricity via a clean electrochemical process, rather than dirty combustion. Even running on a fossil fuel, the systems are approximately 67% cleaner than a typical coal-fired power plant. When powered by a renewable fuel, they can be 100% cleaner. Each Energy Server consists of thousands of Bloom's fuel cells – flat, solid ceramic squares made from a common sand-like "powder."

Conclusion
The customers who are currently using the Bloom are not only happy but also praising about its benefits. Looking at the excitement it has garnered and the positive response of the current customers, it would not be a farfetched to forecast that the product will be a successful one. But whether it will remain a product or will be a revolution (like iPod), only time will say.

Apple’s 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMacs- Hard To Beat

Apple’s 21.5-inch or 27-inch display with edge-to-edge glass covers nearly the entire front of the enclosure. All you see is the display, nothing gets between you and what’s onscreen. Movies, TV shows, websites, photos — everything looks stunning on the new 16:9 widescreen iMac display.

LED Backlighting
When a display has more pixels, you need to push more light through them to achieve the best picture possible. LED backlighting in the new iMac does exactly that, with remarkable brightness and efficiency. Because the LED backlight doesn’t take up much space, the iMac enclosure stays thin — even with all the high-performance components inside.

Higher Resolution
The new 21.5-inch iMac features 1920-by-1080 HD resolution, while the 27-inch iMac features 2560-by-1440 resolution. That’s 78 percent more pixels than the 21.5-inch iMac.

IPS Technology
The iMac display is designed to look great from almost any angle. A technology called in-plane switching (IPS) makes this possible. Whether you’re sitting in front of the display or standing off to the side, you’ll get a perfect picture with superb color consistency and no loss of detail.

Seamless Enclosure
While you’ll find a collection of ports on the back of iMac, you won’t find much else. A seamless, precision-forged enclosure makes the back one continuous aluminum surface. And there’s only one cord: the power cord.

Cool & Quiet
The wider iMac display allows more room to separate the two hottest components, the CPU and the GPU. This keeps things cool inside the iMac enclosure. Apple engineers also implemented an intelligent control system that monitors temperatures and delivers just the right amount of airflow to critical components. And the three fans inside iMac have been tuned to be ultraquiet. A system that operates at 18 decibels when idle — so quiet, you hardly know it’s on.

Wireless Keyboard & Mouse
iMac embodies simple design that eliminates desktop clutter. So naturally, it’s the first Mac to come standard with the Apple Wireless Keyboard and the new wireless Magic Mouse.

Multi-Touch Technology
Magic Mouse is designed to do all the things a mouse should do — pointing, clicking, and scrolling — but with no scroll wheel, no trackball, and no visible button. Magic Mouse uses Multi-Touch technology to let you click, scroll, or swipe anywhere on its perfectly smooth, seamless top shell. But the real magic of Magic Mouse is how it knows what you want to do. A chip inside Magic Mouse acts as a brain, detecting the difference between a resting hand, a scrolling finger, a two-finger swipe, and a simple click.

iMac Graphics

The Tablet War--Interesting Products

Well, the competition to beat Apple's iPad is on!!

Here's some of the products that would give Apple a stiff competition or might even emerge as a winner.

Archos 9 looks eqully stunning and can give iPad a run for its money.

When it comes to PC, can Dell be far away. Dell's Tablet concept looks interesting.

HP's Slate looks enticing too. And with Microsoft behind it, the product can go a long way.

But among the lot, the one garnering great coverages is home grown Notion Ink's Adam. With great specs, less price and stunning looks--Adam can definitely emerge as a winner.

Marketing Public Relations--The Mantra for Many Companies

It is interesting to see how Marketing Public Relations (MPR) is becoming so popular in India, and fast catching on with various organizations. MPR via press releases have been a normal mode since long, but via events are not that old and seem to catch the fancy of the consumers as well as the providers. Recent example is the Apsara Award where the Chevy cars were being shown and introduced at the same platform where the biggies of the entertainment industry were been awarded. After effects of that function was that people not talked about the winners but the flashy cars too.

What is MPR?
Marketing is all about the promotion of a specific product or service of the company, while Public Relations is about the image of the company; and when you join both of them together, you come up with this potent solution called MPR

For the starters, MPR is actually a form of advertisement but not through the traditional mode but via press releases and public events etc. Often time it is deemed as a more powerful tool as the information comes directly from the company and usually has a byte of the top guys in the company which seems more credible because you would prefer to listen to the head honchos of the company rather than listening to some actors mouthing some dialogues.

MPR is Free
MPR most often does not cost you anything, but it can gain more eyeballs than the traditional mode of advertising. Getting the head-honchos of the company talking on the talk shows about the company and its products is not only a powerful tool to communicate directly to the people but you do that without spending a single penny.

In addition, the press releases can get an organization’s message about a solution or a service out for free.

MPR Effective To Fight Bad Press
Holding a press conference or an event to fight any bad or negative coverage about the company, explaining in a talk show about any bad news regarding the company or its products, and publicly confronting any bad press about the company—are great ways to regain the trust of consumers as well as maintain the good image of the company. All these shows that MPR can be a great tool if used effectively, and it can not only make the public aware of an organization and its products but can also keep the trust of the consumers intact.

Apple's iPad Unleash Fear

Read an interesting article--the havoc Apple’s iPad would unleash on the e-reader, TV and computer companies could be similar to the way iPod did to portable music market and even almost wiped out Sony (till then the leader with its walkman) from the scene. Although cynically glorified as an enlarged version of iPhone, the iPad can do better and quicker. The features does look similar to the iPhone but you can use it as an all in one package --- you can read anything, you can see anything and you might even do everything that you can do on your personal computers!!!

Apple’s ability to-go-to market with new imaginative products is mind-boggling…starting with Mac Book to iPod to iPhone and now iPad!! It was not surprising to see that in most of the US Univs, the students could do without the mi2— mac, iPod and iPhone. Be it peer pressure or anything, you are in if you are with mi2.

Now coming back to iPad. Even though the comics and the cynics had a field day for its unusual name and some even went to the extent of comparing it with pads, everybody had to admit that it was real good product.

As per Apple, one can use the device to browse the web, read and send email, enjoy photos, watch videos, listen to music, play games, read e-books and do much much more. It is also lighter and thinner that any laptop or netbook available in the market. Currently, iPad comes in two versions—one with Wi-Fi and the other with both Wi-Fi and 3G.

“iPad is our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPad creates and defines an entirely new category of devices that will connect users with their apps and content in a much more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.”

Gauging by the success of its recent new product launches, it would be interesting to see what changes does this new offering from Apple brings in to the market.

Valentine's Day Celberation, Protests And A Proposal

Well, this much everybody knows-- Valentine’s Day is about celebration of love. There are various stories about what led to the celebration and who actually was the person. It mainly became popular in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the Middle ages, and he’s been credited as the one of the people who made this day popular as the day of expression of romantic love. Nowadays, it’s not only associated with romantic love but love in all forms—thanks to the marketing efforts of numerous greeting cards and gifts-making companies.

Well, this is also true that this day is an import to our country but this is an age of globalization so obviously fancy things catches and there is no harm in having a day for celebration of love—although I am of the view that everyday should be celebration of love.

But to protest against this as an invasion of our culture is like living with a frog-in-the-well mentality. Is it a part of our culture to beat-up boys and girls who celebrate this? No doubt, people like this should have their faces blackened. Today they say no valentine celebration, tomorrow they will say (and have said) no birthday cakes, and after that they will say no trousers and shirts and then one of them might come up with the brilliant idea that everybody should stay in caves!!!

Gentlemen, if you are so interested and vocal about the cultural protectivism start-off something like Radha-Krishna day (who is better to be a symbol of love than Radha-Krishna). Do some good marketing, get some great jingles and employ some great advertising agencies – and it will definitely catch-up. If you go these kinds of productive ways people might like you too and you will end up generating money and employment for many and will be a great defender of culture and tradition.

As for me, earlier I would have preferred to spend my day and any day-- Lying down by the side of the sea, with tiny drops of water falling on my body, the slight breeze kissing me, the smell of the sea heightening my senses, basking under the warmth of the sun, listening to music, reading a good book, cool glasses of Margherita and Mojito in my hands, and nobody to disturb—what a bliss.

But now things seem to have changed. The place where my kiddo and wife is—that’s my bliss and heaven now!!!!

Happy Valentine’s Day Everyone!!! Love Rocks!!!

Pause and Wonder—Controversy Before a movie Release Brings in Moolah

I am not saying that I really believe all these are marketing ploys or PR attempts to bring in good-will for the people involved which would in-turn make them laugh all the way to the bank.

Had an interesting conversation with a friend about how controversies helped movies to become a big hit, and seems (at times, pretty obvious)that all the news were just a part of the game-plan.

My Name is Khan: The controversy helped the movie as well as the defunt Shiv Sena share headlines.

3 Idiots: All the people involved with the movie and the author made money

Kaminey: The romours about Shahid-Priyanka love affair made many people go to the theatres to check them out.

Any movie with MallIka Sherawat: Well, just the news that she is wearing clothes (if you call them clothes) or the so-called ‘leaked news’ about her kissing scenes make people go to her movies.

The list is long, you can find out yourself and would say, “Yeah, it did help these movies!!!”

Overwhemling Response To MNIK Fizzled Out Protests

Yep, I feel proud to be an Indian! The surge of people that went to see the movie MNIK, despite the threats and warnings from Sena Supremo as well from the activists, is a great indication of the fact that nowadays nobody is scared of the tactics used by the muddled-up political parties and their leaders.

The overwhelming response to the movie is a sign of protest against the knee-jerking attempts of the few to induce fear in the minds of the people and use that fear to come to limelight and power. Who can make them understand that those days are gone?!!??

The main lesson learnt is that if you give in to these people, they will want you to give in more and the end will be that you will be left without any identity or dignity. If you fight back, they will slide away. A perfect example of the classic Bully Syndrome!!!

The guys who thought the breaking windows, smashing up properties and issuing mind-less threats could cower people into submission can take a leak now. It is foolish even to think that these acts can win votes, and will in fact be counter-productive to what they might be imagining these nautanki can bring in. Listen to voters and the audience!!! Look at Writings in the Wall!!!

Give these people what they deserve—contempt, ridicule and no importance.

My Name is Khan, Shiv Sena and Shahrukh Khan

Shiv Sena’s protests against My Name is Khan shows the level to which a political party can stoop so as to stay in the news. After being pushed into the corner and revealed as a toothless tiger by the voters—here’s a foolhardy attempt to resurrect itself. Shahrukh Kan was bold and frank enough to admit that there are issues and we should not treat any players the way the Pakistani players were treated (The world of sports should be free from politics). And of course we are the world’s largest democracy and we welcome everyone with open arms. So why this ruckus? A foolish attempt to stay in news, and to show that the party still matters?

The party with this apparent goondaism and fascist attitude has opened itself to ridicule. Does it not realize the hardship of the common people, and the amounts of money people are losing? What will it gain by stopping a show, destroying screens and breaking glass panes of movie theatres and scaring people who have come to buy tickets for the movie? Nothing at all—its only revealing their true colors and exposing their intentions. But the people should not be cowered by this cowardly show, which is just a weak attempt to put fear in everyone’s mind.

We should all go out in droves and see the movie!!! That would be a true defeat for all the political parties or people who share similar fascist attitude. And yes, the whole world is watching us!!

Railway Museum

Went to visit the Railway Museum. Yup, it was the first time--but that's where you go when the kiddo dictates everything. Gone are the days of pub-hopping with friends, romantice dates with the wife, catching the latest movie in the town, or reading a good old novel.

But yeah, it was worth the visit. Moreso, when you are joined by a good friend. My ex-roomie who is a great buddy too was there. Surprising we did not complain about the change, and had a really nice time with our family.

The place was OK but could have been better. The number of engines and the space has been wasted. It can definitely be turned into a better and more attractive place.

Asaam's First Prime Minister

He was and is addressed as “Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi” because he was and still is sincerely loved by the people of Assam. It was not something that he sought for or wanted, but his acts and deeds were so noble and kindhearted that people could not help loving and respecting him. Without expecting anything in return, he worked selflessly dedicating his life to his people and country.
He was a follower and a great proponent of non-violence as a political tool. Despite numerous urgings, he was totally against using violence as a means to an end. No wonder that even the British, against whom he led the whole of the Northeast, were respectful towards him. They did arrest him a couple of times and found no reasons to prolong his imprisonments.
His Rise
His father, who was a medical practitioner, taught him to be a hardworking and kindhearted person. Visiting patients and meeting the people from different strata of society who used to come to his father for help, helped him understand and get a feel for the socio-economic condition of the general people. Such experience from early life created his kindhearted, selfless and loving persona.
He was equally good in both sports and studies. At a very young age, he was admitted to the Cotton Collegiate School in Guwahati. He successfully graduated from the Scottish Church College in Calcutta. His love for his country and his people was apparent in college. During his college life, the stalwarts of Calcutta and their freedom loving aspirations made quite an impression in him. He joined the Indian National Congress as a volunteer.
He came back to Assam and was instrumental in the establishment of the Congress Party in Northeast India, particularly Assam. Before that there was no Congress party in Assam; and when the Non-Cooperation Movement started, he spearheaded the efforts to join all the regional parties and form the Assam Provincial Congress Committee. He was elected as the secretary at its first convention in 1921.
His dedication, hard work and intelligence helped him rise through Congress ranks in the 1930s. All the experiences and the contacts that he gathered helped him win the biggest battle of his political life, which also propelled him to prominence.
His Biggest Battle
Based upon a plan drawn by Professor Coupland, who was an adviser to the Cabinet Mission, the tribal areas of northeastern India including the Garo Hills, Khasi Jaintia Hills, Lushai Hills, Nagaland, North Cachar Hills and the North Eastern Frontier Agency was to be made into a self-governing colony. It would be under the protection of the Crown and each region would have an autonomous status.
All the senior leaders of Congress supported the plan, and failed to see the sinister design of the British. But Gopinath Bordoloi realized the gravity of the situation and rushed to enlighten Mahatma Gandhi about the disastrous consequences if the plan was approved. Gandhi finally understood the designs of the British and supported him. Gandhi himself apprised the Congress leaders about the full implications of the plan and advised them against it and requested them to support Bordoloi.
This act not increased his stature about the people of Assam but also among the rest of India. The Congress leaders openly appreciated his foresight and inputs into the nefarious designs.
Post Independence
People also call him as the “Architect of Modern Assam,” due to his contribution to the progress of this region after Independence. When he became the Chief Minister of Assam, the state had no reliable infrastructure. There were no medical, veterinary and engineering colleges; the roads were in bad condition and many places did not have any proper roads or bridges; and the region was far backward in all aspects compared to the rest of India. He succeeded in completing and achieving most of the work within his reign. He even laid the foundation for sports, music and performing arts. It would not be an exaggeration to state that the total amount of his achievement is much larger than the combined achievements of the Chief Ministers after him.
Another of his major achievement was that when rest of the India was burning in communal riots, there was perfect communal harmony in Assam. He was no doubt a religious person, but he respected all the religions. In fact, he even managed to unite all the tribes and different sections of people and instilled in them a hope and wish for better tomorrow.
Conclusion
Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi’s life is a burning example of the fact that selflessness, love, truth and valor always win. He worked for the people and the country, and never acted selfishly. The current leaders have a lot to learn from him.
At his death, Jawaharlal Nehru rightly said, “For all of us and Assam particularly, this a great loss of a freedom fighter and one who in his high position as Chief Minister of Assam faced courageously many problems of that state.”
The government of India recognized his contributions and posthumously awarded him with Bharat Ratna

An Unsung Freedom Fighter

A couple of days ago, an old journalist friend of mine called me from Assam. It has been ages since I last spoke with him.
The first thought that came to me on hearing his voice was, “He either wants to come to the US or needs money for his NGO!”
But he asked, “Do you know much about Gomdhar Konwar?”
My cynical mind presumed, “This Konwar must be his friend or a relative who needs help!”
He did not wait for my reply and ranted, “I know you don’t know about him. The sad part is that the majority of the people of Assam does not know about him.”
I was little irritated, hence replied rather harshly, “Yes, you are right. I don’t know him. But is there a reason that I should know him?”
He did not seem to mind my rebuke, and simple asked, “Do you know that the first revolt against the British in the Indian sub-continent happened in Assam? And it happened in 1828, much before the famous revolt of 1857. Are you aware of the fact that a person from Assam and not Mangal Pandey might soon be declared as the first martyr of Indian freedom struggle against the British?”
I was intrigued and was hooked, “Was your friend Gomdhar Konwar involved?”
With a light laugh, he responded, “Yeah, Gomdhar Konwar started the Revolt of 1828 against the British. As you know, the British annexed Assam after the treaty of Yandaboo. Earlier they had promised that they would let Assam regain freedom and would go away after chasing away the Burmese, but they later did an about-turn and brought Assam under their rule. They tried by money, power and force to bring everybody under them and succeeded to an extent. But a large number of freedom loving people refused to see them as their rulers. Under the leadership of Gomdhar Konwar, a family member of the deposed Ahom king, the disgruntled people formed a rebel force. The rebels declared him as the King of Assam and asked the British to leave Assam.”
He sighed and continued, “But the British were not the ones to be scared easily, and they unleashed their force to subdue the people of Assam. The rebel force led by Dhananjoy Borgohain met the larger and better-equipped British force at Mariani, Jorhat. The rebels were mercilessly massacred and many were arrested. Gomdhar Konwar was arrested too and was supposedly shipped off to the Andamans. But nobody really knows what happened to him, and many believe that he was killed immediately after being arrested.”
I was silent for some time and then added, “It’s really sad that a large majority of the people of Assam or India really does not know about this episode.”
“Yeah that’s right. But Gomadhar Konwar might finally get his much-deserved place in Indian History! All this might happen due to the efforts of the 200 Year Birth Centenary Committee of Gomadhar Konwar. There are plans to hold a national-level seminar to highlight the sacrifices and contributions of Konwar in particular and early freedom fighters from Assam. The rich history of freedom struggle that happened much before the revolt of 1857 might receive the attention that has eluded it for such a long time.”
“The committee is organizing a three-day program at Nakachari, the place where Gomadhar established his independent kingdom, starting March 20, 2009” he said excitedly.
“A manuscript written by Mokham Baruah in Tai language was recovered in 2006 from Deodhai Gaon, Amguri, Sibsagar. Baruah was a companion of Konwar and recorded everything that happened during the struggle. So we might know more about Gomdhar Konwar, as there are plans to publish the manuscript in three languages – Tai, English and Assamese.”
“I am happy about the fact that people will come to know about all these unsung heroes,” he added happily.
I was ashamed of my cynical thoughts about him and his act of phoning me after such a long time, but I still was not sure why he called me after ages.
So I asked hesitantly, “So how can I help? Do you want me to send some money to the committee or any other person involved in this endeavor? I can mail the money to you.”
“Oh, no; it’s not about money. People have contributed and the committee will get money from the government too. By the way, I am not involved with the endeavor,” he replied.
“So, how can I help?”
“Write about him. Tell people about him. Let everybody know that unsung heroes like him exist in our part of the world.”
Saying so he put his phone down.

Cries From Pothorughat

The car stopped and I woke up. All around it was dark.
I looked outside. The thin beam of light from the car’s headlights pierced through the blanket of darkness. It was drizzling, and we have stopped at a place far from the human habitation!
The screaming silence of the place woke my wife and she asked me, “What happened?”
Before I could say anything, the driver replied, “There seems to be some problem with the car. It just stopped without giving any warning. We are lucky that there were no cars around.”
‘Now, we would be lucky if any vehicle passes by,’ I thought. I did not say thing because I could feel that my wife was a little scared.
“It will be alright,” I said to assure her and calm her fears. She nodded and gave me a nervous smile.
The driver’s helper turned back and said, “I think there might be problem with the battery. I will push the car. Why don’t you two step out of the car for a moment?”
Although my wife was a little apprehensive, she could see that there was no other alternative.
They tried for sometime and then gave up.
‘I think we need a mechanic,’ the driver said.
I was angry with them for not checking for problems before embarking on the journey, and hence I snapped, ‘Where will we get a mechanic in this godforsaken place?’
We stood there in silence and looked around.
‘I see a light out there,’ the driver said after sometime.
We looked towards the direction he pointed, and could see a light burning in the distance.
‘You guys stay inside the car. I will go and find out if it’s someone’s house or a hotel. We might get a mechaince there.’ Saying so the driver started walking towards the light.
We got inside the car and sat silently in the darkness.
After a few moments but what then seemed like eternity, the driver returned.
“It’s a small tea shop. Sir and madam, both of you can stay there for sometime and have tea. The shopkeeper told me that there is a garage some distance away. We will go and get a mechanic. The shopkeer even asked me to take his bicylce so that we can reach the garage quickly,” the driver said with a smile.
They pushed the car towards the shop, while my wife and I walked silently behind them.
We reached the shop faster than we thought. It was a small one-room shop. There were three chairs and a table towards the one corner of the shop, while the kitchen was in another corner of the room.
An old man, apparently the owner of the shop was waiting outside. The old dhoti and the torn blanket that adorned him were proof enough to say that the shop was not doing well.
He welcomed us inside the shop, slowly lighted the wooden stove and found a small saucepan to prepare tea.
The driver and his helper got on the bicycle and went to fetch the mechanic.
The old man walked towards us and sat down on the empty chair.
“Not many people stop at my shop. Today is my lucky day that you guys stepped into my shop,” he said with a smile brightening up his thin and tired face.
We looked at him and smiled.
Before I could ask anything, my wife enquired, “What place is this?”
He smiled and replied, “Pothorughat”.
The hissing of the boiling water signaled that the tea was almost ready. He poured the tea in three small cups, and placed it on the small table in front of us.
As we took the tea cups, he asked, “Have you heard about Pothorughat?”
I smiled akwardly, and replied, “I do not know much about Pothorughat. And anyway, my wife is not from Assam; hence she had not heard about the place.”
“Have you heard about Jallianwalabagh?”
We nodded.
He let out a sigh, “That is the sad part; everyone knows about Jallianwalabagh massacre but most of the people do not know what happened at Pothorughat!”
He took a sip and then asked, “Do you know which year the Jallianwalabagh massacre happened?”
“It happened in 1919,” my wife replied.
“And the Porthorughat massacre happened much before that, in the year 1894,” he replied without missing a beat.
“In addition, it was a major revolt against the British after the revolt of 1857. And it shook the British Empire,” he added.
We got curious and I requested, “Please tell us more about it. Did anyone from your family took part in it?”
“Every men who was alive in 1894 took part in it. My grandfather and his brothers took part. He lost all his brothers, but he somehow managed to escape. He painted the live picture of the Pothorughat revolt for me.”
“Assam was already under the British. In addition to the various suppressive and exploitive means to collect money from the people, a new and increased agricultural tax was imposed on the people. It angered the peasants, because with the new tax it would be difficult for them to survive.”
“The poor peasants rose in the revolt. Various raizor mels (people’s meetings) were organized to protest against the British and their exploitive ways. People of all caste and communities took part in it. The British tried their best to divide the people based on their religion, but it only strengthened the unity.”
“Seeing no other way, a British brigade under Lt. Singer was sent to disperse a peaceful raizor mel. It angered the gathered people so much that they fought with the British troops empty handed; and in the fight Lt. Singer was killed and the rest of the troops had to beat a hasty retreat.”
“This event shook the very core of the British Empire. They never thought that a few measly peasants would be bold enough to defeat the British military and that too empty-handed. They knew that if the news reached the rest of India, it would encourage poeple to fight against the British; after all the Assamese peasants showed that the British troops were not invincible. The British wanted to teach a hard lesson as a reminder to others that they should not revolt against them.”
“Another raizor mel was called for at Pothorughat. It was to be a non-violent meeting, where besides the protest and a call was to be made to restrain the people from further violence. The British Commissioner came to know about it and dispatched a large brigade of troops”
“Just as the meeting began, the troops surrounded the field and started firing. When they ran out of bullets, they started killing the people with their bayonet. It did not end there, the nearby villages were attacked; the villagers were tortured and killed and their properties were destroyed.”
“The official death toll at the raizor mel attack was 194. But in reality, many more were killed; as said, thousands of people gathered there and nobody came out alive. In addition, nobody had the counts of the villagers killed as the part of the repression.”
He ended the story, and looked outside. A stream of tears flowed down his old eyes.
We also sat in silence, not knowing what to say or how to react.
“The car is ready,” said the driver. We were so engrossed in the story that we did not realize when the mechanic reached there and fixed the car.
We got up slowly. I paid the mechanic and took out some money to pay the old man.
The old man refused to take the money and said, “You are my guests. I cannot take money from my guests.”
As we walked towards the car, the old man said, “Do you think the world will ever hear the cries of the Revolt of Pothorughat?”
The question was just a statement of despair!
As car moved, a gush of wind swayed the trees around; and for a moment I felt as if I heard the cries of the martyrs of Pothorughat asking me, “Will the world ever hear about us?”
Note: The account of Pothogughat revolt was as heard from the old man, hence the author do not claim it to be true.
